The Montreux Jazz Festival is the best-known music festival in Switzerland. It is held annually in early July in Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva. Founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs, the Montreux Jazz Festival has become an unmissable event for music fans over the years, both in Switzerland and abroad. In the 1970s, the festival began broadening its scope, including blues, soul, and rock artists. Towards the end of the decade, the festival expanded even more, including music from all continents (with an emphasis on Brazilian music) and lasting a full two weeks. | |
Montreux is situated at the foot of the Alps on the banks of Lake Geneva, in a region known for its unique climate and quality of life as "The Swiss Riviera". The town is only 90 kilometres (56 miles) from Geneva International Airport, which is served by numerous airlines. As of 2007, the Convention Centre at Montreux hosts two main stages, Stravinsky Auditorium and Miles Davis Hall, as well as the smaller Montreux Jazz Cafe, and several smaller open-air stages around the Centre. Additional themed shows (Bahia, Blues, etc) are held on boats cruising the lake and train cars traveling the region, and various workshops and competitions are held at the nearby Montreux Palais and Le Petit Palais. The 42nd Montreux Jazz Festival will be held from July 4 to 19, 2008. On the night of July 14 (Monday) a special tribute will be given to Quincy Jones (see photo): more than twenty artists will perform at the Auditorium Stravinski, celebrating the 75th anniversary of this music legend. They will be accompanied by the Swiss Army Big Band directed by Pepe Lienhard and the Montreux In the House band, featuring Greg Phillinganes, Paul Jackson Jr., Nathan East, John Robinson and Paulinho da Costa. Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. (born March 14, 1933) is an American music impresario, conductor, record producer, musical arranger, Academy Award-winning film composer and trumpeter. During five decades in the entertainment industry, Jones has earned a record 79 Grammy Award nominations, 27 Grammys, including a Grammy Legend Award in 1991. He is best known as the producer of two of the top-selling records of all time: the album Thriller, by pop icon Michael Jackson, which sold 104 million copies worldwide, and the charity song “We Are the World”.
